Song News (May/June 2017)

MAY 1, 2017 (UPDATED) – Happy Birthday to George Strait, 65 years old on May 18th! Following George Strait’s wildly successful 2 Nights of Number 1’s at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in April, George has announced that due to the overwhelming fan reaction, he will continue the concept of playing his record-setting collection of 60 No. 1 hits again in July. Rolling Stone called the historical 2 Nights of Number 1’s shows “extraordinary” and the Las Vegas Review-Journal duly noted that “Strait receives something like 10 standing ovations around the venue every night.” The first night of Strait’s shows kicks off with his very first #1 hit “Fool Hearted Memory” that Byron co-wrote with Blake Mevis back in 1981. Missouri singer Ryan Hinkle continues to gain ground on Spotify with his “Colder Than A Bad Girl’s Heart” co-written by Byron with Billy Yates, and Chris Young. Iconic Australian artist Melinda Schneider is working with producer Charles Fisher (Air Supply, Savage Garden, Olivia Newton-John), and will be recording a song she co-wrote with Byron last year. The legendary Mac Gayden has recorded a song he co-wrote with Byron for his next album. Mac was a founding member of several well-known bands (Area Code 615, Barefoot Jerry, Skyboat). Mac Gayden also co-wrote the mega-pop hit ‘Everlasting Love’. Byron is in the studio putting finishing touches on the second EP for Michael Cosner. The EP is expected to be released in late 2017, and will include songs Michael co-wrote with several well-known songwriters. A song Byron co-wrote with artist Kelsey Lamb is being licensed for an upcoming Lifetime Channel movie. Kelsey is also working on her new project with producer Bill McDermott. WJO/Universal Music Australia artist Brad Butcher has been in the studio recording a few songs he co-wrote with Byron. An amazing update on Austin-based Drew Fish Band …the launch of their first single and video of ‘Sounds Like A Plan’ (Hill/Grimes/Brown) took them to #3 on the Texas Regional Radio Chart, and they’ve made a huge jump to #13 in the TRACtion Texas chart (5/17). We hear that ABC Music/Australia’s well-loved duo Baylou will be releasing a song co-written with Byron as a single. The single will feature one of Australia’s hottest bands the  The Wolfe Brothers. There is only a month or so left for Alabama fans to see the Alabama: Song Of The South exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. The exhibit runs through June 12, 2017, and includes the original handwritten lyric for Alabama’s iconic hit “Born Country”, written by Byron Hill and John Schweers. Fans of anything about Nashville should pick up a book by Mason Douglas called ‘Now You Know Nashville – 2nd Edition: The Ultimate Guide to the Pop Culture Sights and Sounds That Made Music City’. Among tons of helpful information and sights to see,  the book contains pictures of places where some of Nashville’s iconic songs were written, including pictures of the locations where Johnny Lee’s ‘Pickin’ Up Strangers’ (Hill), and George Strait’s ‘Fool Hearted Memory’ (Hill/Mevis) were written, along with the stories behind the songs. Mason’s book is available at all online outlets and at The Tennessee Songwriters Record Shop located in The Tacky Turtle at 2471 Music Valley Dr., Suite 110 Nashville TN. The store also stocks books by other music industry authors including Ralph Murphy, Cory Lee Barker, Chad Jeffers, Jerry Foster, Warren Sellers, and CDs by Nashville songwriters including Byron Hill, Erin Enderlin, Jerry Foster, Mark Narmore, Alyssa Jacey and more. With new episodes of the Nashville TV series just weeks away, a new soundtrack album will follow on June 1st. The Music of Nashville Original Soundtrack Season 5 Volume 2 will feature 11 brand new tracks including the song “Can’t Remember Never Loving You” (Hill/Janes) performed by Charles Esten and Connie Britton. The album release will coincide with the upcoming episodes to finish out the dramatic season. Thirty-nine years ago on May 13, 1978, Byron moved from Winston-Salem, NC to Nashville and landed a “tape copy” job at ATV Music Group working for an amazing list of songwriters, and four months later, he signed his first exclusive songwriting deal with ATV. More details coming soon as we update this page throughout May and June!
