DECEMBER 19, 2016 (UPDATED) – It’s been a good year for traditional country cuts by legacy artists…Mark Chesnutt, Mickey Gilley, Tracy Byrd, Moe Bandy, and The Oak Ridge Boys have all recently recorded and released Byron’s songs. In a recent interview Byron mentioned….“It feels a little like going back in time. All of these artists were high on my wish-list of desired cuts the first time they hit the scene. It is so good to seem them all recording fresh material and still doing what they love. Inspiring!” Texas superstar Tracy Byrd has just released a new album called All American Texan. The October 10th release, contains a brand new recording of a 1993 co-write by Byron Hill and Tracy Byrd called “Texas Truck”. The song was written on the first of several songwriting road trips Byron took with Tracy and his band. The Austin based Drew Fish Band will be releasing “Sounds Like A Plan” (written by Byron Hill, Roger Brown and Curtis Grimes) from Drew’s Treat You Right EP as a single in the Texas Music market. A video is also to be released soon. A new song called “North Atlantic Blues” (written by Byron Hill, Ottar Johansen and Bjoern Nilsen) was recorded for a special release in Norway called Good Ol’ Boys, by Benoni & Big Hand, featuring iconic Norwegian artist Ottar “Big Hand” Johansen. Release is set for February 1, 2017 on New Cut Music. Missouri artist Ryan Hinkle’s 2015 album Once Is Not Enough and single “Colder Than A Bad Girl’s Heart” are certainly gaining a lot of attention lately. The album contains three songs written by Byron Hill, Chris Young and Billy Yates. The new CD Kicking It Down The Road by Mickey Gilley has been released. The title song was written by Byron Hill, Michael Cosner and Mike Kenny, and is racking in some cool reviews. The popular website Saving Country Music reviewed Gilley’s album (see review link below). Jeremy Burchard of Wide Open Country (Austin’s magazine for country fashion, food & drink, domestic travel and country culture content. See article link below) says “… in a performance of the title track ‘Kickin’ It Down The Road,’ Gilley says the strength of the song inspired him to do a whole new album.” The highly respected KOKE-FM (Austin’s Country Alternative. See website link below) reports….‘Several Texas artists are celebrating the release of George Strait’s new Strait Out Of The Box: Part 2 box set by covering their favorite George songs, including Mark McKinney who covered “Fool Hearted Memory” (Byron Hill/Blake Mevis). Note…”Fool Hearted Memory” is actually not on Strait Out Of The Box: Part 2, but is on the original Strait Out Of The Box released in 1995. On November 3rd, Jeff Childress released a beautiful recording and video of “Who’s Counting” (Hill/Childress), a song written nearly ten years ago. A free download of the recording can be found at the Jeff Childress link below. The second single and video clip release from 2016 Toyota Star Maker Australian artist Karin Page, is sure to hit home with anyone who’s ever been a little homesick. Karin co-wrote the song ‘Wherever You Are’ with Byron while in Nashville in June for CMA Fest. The recording was produced in Australia by Andrew Cochrane and Daniel Spirovski. The video was produced and directed in Australia by Josh Favaloro of The Filmery. An article by Tammy Ragusa for the website Sounds Like Nashville (Dec. 5) lists Gary Allan’s recording of ‘Nothing On But The Radio’ (Hill/Long/Blackmon) from his See If I Care album as one of the 10 Essential Gary Allan Songs, stating…“Gary earned quite the reputation for being brooding and moody, but it was mostly based on his dark appearance and piercing eyes. In reality, he’s a cowboy surfer and his 2004 smash, ‘Nothing On but the Radio’ showed he had as much a knack for a fun, breezy number as he did for more introspective tunes.A new compilation album called Country Heat Christmas was released in November on Sony/Canada, containing the song “Christmas In Canada” (Hill/Bamford). The recording was originally released on Australian born/Canadian artist Gord Bamford’s Christmas In Canada CD in 2013.
